What’s it about?
Justin Derrico lands at the JTC studio and brings a suitcase full of rock soloing ideas that work. And he’s ready to share. In-depth lessons, four balls-to-the-wall solos and ideas that are accessible as they are kick-ass.
The modern Plini-inspired “Helios Rises”, the 90’s Metallica vibe of “4x8” and the bass-happy tones of “The Rumble” combine to give Justin a canvas to do his thing. Four solos that fuse composition and improvisation, packed with ideas you can steal and tweak.
In 40+ minutes of lessons, Justin gives you a personalised and holistic view of his road-tested tactics for both improv and composition. “Get out jail free cards”, go-to shapes and simple ways to nail changes.
What will I learn?
“If you play something nice, play it twice” is a piece of advice that Justin’s lived by, and it’s true. It’s simple, effective and part of the core of Justin’s approach. You’ll learn ideas that make this approach easier with “monkey tricks” such as 3-note-per-string tapping ideas that are less complicated than they seem.
You’ll know what to target on a track, how to play around changes, and how to add a little flavour to scales and triads using chromaticism, to build tension and release.
The idea is to develop your bag of tricks to use when improvising and composing. As you dig into Justin’s solos, you’ll uncover vocabulary that you can adapt and technical approaches to incorporate into your phrases. Travel the whole neck, use colourful open strings and create sonically diverse licks with and without a whammy bar.
